How to get that coveted glamorous look
From the BAFTAs to the Academy Awards, this year’s awards season has provided an abundance of inspiration for recreating some of the most glamorous looks that graced the red carpet.
From Emma Stone’s perfect red lip at the Oscars, to Amy Adams striking updo at the Baftas, it’s no secret that it takes hours of preening with an army of stylists, make-up artists and hair pros to get an A-lister red carpet-ready.
While we can’t provide you with your own glam squad, we’ve compiled a complete guide on how to recreate awards season’s most stunning looks.
The first place to start when you are preparing for an event is with your skin. While it’s important to care for your skin with a healthy skincare routine, there are some quick tricks you can adopt to make your skin plumper and more lustrous. Dr Leah’s Clinic in Loughton offers a range of skin treatments and facials that will get your skin looking its brightest. If you’re in for the long haul, the clinic has recently launched it’s 12 week Skin Transformation programme as part of its #barefacedbysummer campaign.
Cosmetic doctor and co-owner of Dr Leah Cosmetic Skin Clinics, Leah Totten, explains: “Our skin transformation treatment is a new rejuvenation package we’ve introduced to clear any imperfections, combat signs of ageing and discolouration, to boost a smoother, brighter complexion.” The treatment has been popular among celebrities, including Towie’s Lauren Goodger. Designed to improve sun damage, remove skin blemishes, correct uneven skin tone and give an overall flawless complexion, the treatment includes Obagi medical strength products for a home skincare regimen. The products are designed to reduce pigmentation and brighten the skin, as well as reduce breakouts. Three laser treatments at the clinic will treat any pigmentation or redness and give an even and glowing skin tone.
If you’re looking for a quicker fix, there are lots of other options to try. Dr Leah says: “We offer a range of different skin peels, and our lactic acid peel is particularly good if you’re looking to brighten your skin or if you are preparing for a special event.”
She adds: “The Dr Leah bespoke facial is also perfect for plumping the skin instantly. If you’re going out that evening you’ll notice the results, plus, by prepping the skin your makeup will stay in place for longer.”
Nothing completes an outfit quite like a bold lip. Emma Stone’s Oscars look was all about 1930s Hollywood glamour, with a deep red lip, rosy cheeks and pale matte skin. Alternatively, make like Emma Roberts and Nicole Kidman with a bold red hue complete with orange under tone for a statement pout that’s bound to turn heads. Other on-trend hues include deep purple and berry tones, perfect for olive skinned beauties and those who dare to do something a little different.
But what’s the secret to pulling off a standout lip stain? “It’s all about confidence, and staying power,” says Georgina Warren, makeup expert and owner of Bare Beautiful salon in Barking. “Start by prepping lips so that they are soft and smooth using a moisturising lip balm or lip primer.”
We love Antipodes Kiwi Seed Oil Lip Conditioner (£16), perfect for softening our lips and helping our chosen lippie stay put from day to night. For dry and chapped pouts and those which need a little more TLC, use an old toothbrush to gently buff away dead skin cells to create the perfect base. Next, it’s time for application. “The trick is to apply enough lippie to create a bold hue, but not too much that it frightens people away, or clumps,” explains Georgina.
For red-carpet glamour, opt for a matte hue that packs a punch but won’t create a sticky mess if the wind makes your hair misbehave. And for those looking for a more defined look, team with a liner one shade darker than your lipstick to create a plumper and fuller pout.
Get Amy’s Oscar up do
Charles Worthington brand ambassador Ken O’Rourke used a ‘rope braiding’ technique he dreamt up on New Year’s Eve to style Amy Adams’ auburn locks for the Baftas.
To recreate the look, prep hair with Blow Dry Primer, then pull it back into a sleek ponytail at the crown and secure with elastic.
Split the ponytail into two, twist the hair of one section in on itself, then twist both sections together and secure with another elastic.
Secure the ‘twisted rope’ with grips all the way down to the nape of the neck, and then finish with a generous spritz of All Over Gloss Spray.

LVL Lashes at Loughton Beauty Clinic
Nothing is quite as enticing and glamorous as a pair of fluttery dark lashes. Although I had never ventured there myself, I had heard a lot about lash tinting and the various kinds of lash fillers out there,so I figured - for the sake of research - it was time I gave it a try.
I headed over to Loughton Beauty Clinic to try out their popular LVL Lashes treatment. In this ‘length-volume-lift’ package, your lashes are both lifted and tinted, for a more dramatic but natural look that lasts between four and six weeks. I had previously gone in for a patch test, which I appreciated as it reassured me I wouldn’t come out in some horrible rash. The clinic is cosy and clean, and there’s a really friendly atmosphere which immediately made me feel at ease.
Unsure of what to expect, I lay down on the table. The treatment consisted of three parts: two solutions were applied to my eyelashes to help them curl and lift, and finally a tint was applied to give them that beautiful dark shade. As the solutions were doing their magic, I got a well-deserved lie-down and chill. So chilled was I in fact, that by the time the treatment was over I felt reinvigorated as though I had just had a power nap.
And then the results…
I can see why people love this treatment - although my lashes are already relatively long, they came out defined, beautifully rounded and looking as though I had a coat of mascara on even though I was completely makeup-free. From start to finish, the treatment lasted for about an hour. While I could have been out the door much quicker with just the tint, the extra time for the lift is well worth it, as it really gives you an open and fresh look.
