Debbie Ellen is the founder of DEEP, a business specialising in Reiki and Life Coaching. This month she talks to WEL about leaving the civil service to embark on a successful and life-changing career, as well as a start in the dating industry

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Debbie Ellen. I am a Reiki practitioner and Life Coach. I also retail precious crystals and doTERRA aromatherapy oils.

Where do you live and why?

I live in Epping; even though I grew up in London, my heart belongs to the countryside. Epping Forest was where my family went for day trips when I was a child so it has always felt like home to me.

What is the best part of your job?

Hearing the changes that my work has brought to others because this is ‘life’ work and therefore life-changing. I remember every person over the years who has said that I have made a difference and it brings me so much pleasure. I will continue to expand and develop my expertise to ensure I am bringing the best to all my clients.

What’s the worst part of your job?

The reminder of how common it is for many of us to have more faith, love and commitment in everything but ourselves.

How do you relax?

Doing my own Reiki, I love reading, exploring the forest with the children…oh, and a sun bed or a massage.

How do you like to spend your time with your family?

We can be really silly and goof around. Having a 12-year-old, 6-year-old and a 5 month old baby, I get the best of it all and I am sure it is the children that keep me grounded but also young at heart. They motivate me to work hard but they are also a reminder not to take life too seriously.

Do you have a fitness regime?

I often participate in boxing classes, which I have enjoyed for years and Fit West Essex Boot camps with Odel - he is a favourite. Bikram yoga in Loughton is something I would like to make time for because I have really enjoyed it in the past. However, I do a more relaxed Yoga class once a week to give my busy brain a rest!

Do you have a guilty pleasure?

Coffee and cocktails, depending on what day it is!

What is your biggest achievement in your career so far?

Being brave enough to step out of the Civil Service and take with me what I loved from my job of 11 years: the valuable knowledge of how to create a tailored service that meets the needs of each individual.

Can you share your future ambitions?

Firstly, I will be completing my Counselling (Bsc) Hons next year, which will enable me to extend my work within DEEP as a BACP Qualified Counsellor. Gaining a degree is something I have wanted to do for a long time. I think about the possibility of opening a retreat in the future that will offer the full range of holistic therapies that I have studied to date and more.

Do you have any plans for the summer?

This summer is very exciting as my brother is getting married. I also have a Yoga retreat booked a couple of weeks before the launch of my dating website for West Essex: Exclusive Essex Singles at The Kings Oak. The site offers members the benefit of exclusive discounts with West Essex’s most reputable establishments. Through my own dating experiences I felt there was something missing from the online dating scene. It is a very personal thing, whether it is for a bit of fun or commitment.
