Carl Fisher, creative director of Zoology hair salon, shares his views on finding a perfect pair of jeans and why he has an Italian flair for romance
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Carl Fisher and I am a creative director of the award-winning hair salon Zoology. I am also a co-owner of Zoology Mens.
How did you get started?
I started off as a photographer for Tony & Guy and I loved the whole industry so I attended the Tony & Guy academy in Waterloo and thats where my career as a hairdresser began.
What do you love about your job?
The creativity; I like transforming people. I love spontaneous days and the fact that each day is different.
What is the secret of your success?
Dedication. Hairstyling is my lifes passion and I also love being around people. I am a great listener and I actually pay attention to what people want.
What has been the proudest moment in your career so far?
Winning the Schwartzkopf Creative Team Award 2009 and then scooping the Best Mens Award (Male Hairdresser) 2009.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
Hopefully owning two to three Zoology Mens salons. It is also my ambition to win the Young Hairdresser of the Year award.
Where do you live and what do you like about it?
I live in Ongar. I love that its a quiet, suburban village but that its in the middle of everything. Its fantastic to just pop to the farm and walk over the fields.
What are you driving at the moment?
At the moment Im driving a typical hairdressers car a silver MG.
Which is your favourite local restaurant and why?
Smiths Brasserie in Ongar is my absolute favourite. I also adore El Toro Loco in Wanstead for fresh tapas.
Where do you go for a lads night out?
Mainly Shoreditch or Brick Lane.
Football or rugby?
Definitely football Im a Spurs fan.
What are your hobbies?
I paint portraiture to relax. I also like playing golf, dancing and generally having a good time with friends and family.
What are you listening to on your iPod?
Kasabian, they rock.
Do you have a claim to fame?
I do, but I dont kiss and tell.
Where do you go in West Essex for a fashion fix?
Jun Qi in South Woodford or Zee & Co in Loughton are favourites of mine.
Do you have a favourite hairdresser?
Of course, its Mark Mountney, owner of Zoology. Hes an amazing hairdresser.
Do you have a top tip for personal grooming?
Yes. Get your hair cut regularly and try to change your style with the seasons.
What luxury could you not do without?
Hair products and cocktails bloody Marys are the way forward.
What makes you smile?
Funny films; classic Laurel and Hardy movies are my favourite. Great music and finding the last pair of perfect jeans in your size in the shop.
Whats the most romantic thing you have ever done?
I once took a girl to Florence. She was wined, dined and serenaded. Not a bad effort, heh?
