With a four acre enclosure, a 30ft swimming pool, agility course, and a lure machine, pups love staying at Doggy Dorchester. The family-run hotel for dogs is in Chingford and boasts luxury kennels, including ‘family’ rooms for pups that cannot be without their doggy companion. The canine crèche was the brain child of Jane Falco. Lauren spoke to Jane to find out why she started a hotel for dogs and what makes Doggy Dorchester stand out from other kennels.

Why did you start Doggy Dorchester?

We decided to open a luxury kennel for people who wouldn’t normally use such services. Although each dog receives luxury care, the prices are affordable and in line with normal kennels. We ensure every dog is constantly let out for exercise and play in our fully equipped fields and swimming pool.

What does a regular day at Doggy Dorchester entail?

We start our morning feeding the dogs that have stayed overnight. We change their water bowls and clean the kennels before opening at 9am which is when the dogs get dropped off for the day, some of our overnight guests go home and we start doing our daily pick-ups for dogs coming for creche or for the start of an extended stay. Once all the dogs are here, it’s play time all day. We close at 5pm but unlike other kennels I go back to work at 8pm to let them all out for a final bit of exercise, clean the kennels and change all the water bowls before tucking them all up for the night.

How many dogs do you look after in one day?

It varies from day to day. Creche dogs come in Monday to Friday while their owners are at work or running errands and some dogs pop by for a couple of hours purely for the exercise. We are a very small business and we believe the dogs should have as much one-to-one time as possible. We don’t believe in dogs being locked up in kennels all day – Dogs that sleep over get between six and seven walks a day!

What makes Doggy Dorchester stand out?

The dog’s happiness is our main priority. All of our kennels are luxury with some even offering sofas, armchairs, plasma TVs and radios. We want the dogs to feel like they are in a warm, homely environment. Plus, included in our competitive set price are daily photos of all the dogs which we upload to our Facebook group so the owners can see what fun their dogs are getting up to. We also wash all the dogs for free when they are ready to go home after their holiday.

Do you offer any other services?

Owners can pop in to get their dog washed, brushed and dried for £10 and can rent the field for £15 per hour to enable their pups to play in a large open space. We also offer pet photography. Prices vary so please call for an appointment or to discuss.

How do you tailor each dog’s stay to their needs?

Everyone at Doggy Dorchester are experienced dog handlers. I have rescued dogs for 20 years so I have extensive knowledge in knowing how to make them happy. Dogs are assessed on temperament before they come to stay with us so we can find the most suitable kennel based on the dogs personality. We also spend time finding a game that they love during their fun and personable one-to-one time.

Prices start from £8 for two hours. Overnight stays start from £25 per night
