My Pet & I: Funky Dogs

We caught up with Kim Nolan, owner of Funky Dogs in Chingford, and her three favourite canines

After discovering that a career in the big smoke was not for her, Kim Nolan realised that puppies and parlours was more her passion. Cue Funky Dogs, professional dog groomers in Chingford and an armful of canine charity work and she couldn’t be happier.

When did you realise you wanted to work with dogs?

I spent years travelling and living in Hong Kong where I rescued my beloved Nellie who was dumped in a bin. Upon my return I worked in the city, and hated it. I adored dogs and quite frankly found it a far more attractive option than working in an office. So my journey began. I went to college then started working as a trainee in a salon and I’ve never looked back!

Why did you open Funky Dogs?

After working from home for years, the perfect shop and location became available and our doors opened three years go this March. It has flown by!

What makes Funky Dogs different from other groomers?

Obviously, first and foremost Funky Dogs is a dog grooming service. There are no gimmicks, just a compassionate and realistic approach to grooming. To me it’s about being practical and understanding what’s best for the dog’s lifestyle. If your dog is over a muddy forest every day, do you really want a long coat?

Tell us about your dogs?

All of my dogs are rescue dogs. I would only ever take unwanted dogs as there are so many beautiful dogs needing homes. I have Oscar a boxer dog, who is very needy and affectionate. Barnaby a shih tzu who thinks he is the boss of the three and can be a little miserable at times and last year I rescued an old Staffordshire bull terrier called Mabel. I adore all my dogs and they love each other – Barnaby seems to have a soft spot for Oscar and tends to snuggle up to him.

Why did you decide to adopt Mabel?

I saw Mabel’s photo on Facebook and her little grey face melted my heart. She was at a rescue near Thurrock, so I went to meet her a few times and then brought her home. All dogs deserve a loving home, and an old dog should not spend their days in kennels, they should be spoilt and loved to the very end. I love my dogs more than anything in the world.

You also volunteer and contribute to animal charities. Can you tell us more?

We collect money all year for the local dog rescue and assist the amazing local ‘dog lost’ team when looking for missing dogs. We adore dogs and do everything we can to help, which is why Funky Dogs do not charge for nail trims. Instead, we ask that our customers donate a minimum of £5 into our charity pot which soon builds up, and all goes to the local rescue. We collect all unwanted dog items too, such as food, toys and bedding and pass it all onto the rescue. The number of neglected and abandoned dogs is astounding and as much help is needed as possible.
