As we are currently consigned to our homes, never has window dressing been so important. James Posner of Chingford’s London Shades tells us more
They are often the finishing touches to your home, but how you furnish your interior window spaces is the thing that can give any house a memorable look and feel. Whether you are opting for privacy, light, shade or a cosy ambience your choices can enhance the feel and finish of any room. At our specialist company, London Shades in Chingford, we have one of the largest showrooms in the capital, full to bursting with blinds, curtains, awnings and shutter ideas to help you decide what’s right for your home and windows.
Tastes are definitely changing when it comes to windows. Gone are the fussy feels and instead our customers are opting for more simple finishes. Of course, different properties suit different treatments: shutters are a clean, modern finish providing privacy and style for a newer house, whereas curtains or blinds will look warm and cosy in a more traditional style and setting.
We attend trade design shows twice a year and follow colour trends from around the world to make sure we are abreast of all the latest looks and styles. The colours for 2020 include the Pantone Colour of the Year which is Classic Blue, plus from Dulux a pale greyish green called Tranquil Dawn. But apart from colour and design the very latest trends include motorised and voice-controlled shading. Great for busy homes and people. All of our products in the showroom can be motorised on request.
Into the light
Our original business, Posner Interiors, has been trading since 1932 and was established by my grandfather Louis. So as a family business in the West Essex area we have seen lots of different styles of properties over the years, from period Victorian houses to modern penthouses. All these different but exciting challenges give us opportunities to get creative and find the right treatment for every window. London Shades is our sister company which was started because the scale at Posner Interiors was growing rapidly. This way we can have a dedicated shutter specialist and Luxaflex gallery in the largest window dressing showroom in Greater London. We have over 50 suppliers, which also means we have over 50,000 options for customers to choose from. Our expert staff can help guide you in the right direction and find the perfect treatment for you and your home. Our displays are changed constantly to showcase all the latest looks and trends. We are able to offer a fully comprehensive service, from design, measuring, manufacturing and installation to after sales care.
Closing the deal
Customers are sometimes unsure what to look for when it comes to interior window dressings so it often helps to consider some pointers.Look at the proportion and aspect of the window in comparison to the room size and shape. This will help determine your final choices. Also think about whether privacy or dim-out is required. Where will the blinds or curtains stack? Would heat retention or sound absorption be of benefit?
Floor to ceiling finishes will make a room feel taller, and using fabrics will definitely make a room more cosy and help with acoustics. The main feature of most rooms is the windows and the light entering them, so how the light is filtered and the window dressed determines the general atmosphere and helps complete the furnishing of the room.
The future is most definitely motorised. For me asking Alexa or Google to open or close my curtains and blinds is always fun. I’m excited by anything that makes my life at home easier. I think our customers will appreciate this innovative function too!
