Fish and chips is a classic British staple, the meal of choice for Friday nights after work with all of your favourite extras from mushy peas to curry sauce. Here are our favourite places to get some scrumptious battered cod and chips

1. West Mersea Oyster Bar, Mersea Island

West Mersea Oyster Bar has been providing the people of Mersea Island with top quality fresh fish and seafood for years. Despite its primary role as an oyster bar they also serve a cracking fish and chips and a stunning selection of fresh seafood. Enjoy a delicious battered fillet of fresh cod with home cut chips, mushy peas and their very own in house tartar sauce all for £10.95.

2. Chris’s Fish & Chips, Rayleigh

Chris’ Fish & Chips Restaurant in Rayleigh is hailed by many of the locals as being one of the best in the area. Serving deliciously crisp, lightly battered fish with large portions of chips there is nothing here not to like. Chris’ is doing so well in fact that it recently opened another branch in Brentwood. All of the food is cooked fresh to order so although there may be a slight wait, it will definitely be worth it.

3. Pisces Fish Bar, Wickford

A family run fish and chip shop in Wickford, Essex where customer service is put first. Sadly, it’s not a sit down restaurant so you’ll have to settle for a takeaway but the portions are large and the prices are fair, what more could you ask for?

4. Fisherman’s Wharf, Southend-on-Sea

Traditional family restaurant the Fisherman’s Wharf can be found on the Southend seafront enjoying spectacular views of the estuary and serving great seafood dishes. The traditional fish and chips off the menu comes with a choice of cod, plaice, haddock or skate all fried in a delicious, golden batter.

5. Oldham’s Fish Restaurant, Westcliff-on-Sea

Oldham’s in Westcliff is a family owned restaurant that has been serving its community since 1967. Their philosophy is simple: use the best quality fish and potatoes and cook them fresh. They have a reputation for serving consistently fantastic food with excellent customer service, and their over-the-counter menu is extensive with plenty of tasty extras to choose from.

6. Islanders Fish Restaurant, Canvey Island

Islanders has been a part of Canvey Island for over 30 years and has only recently undergone a complete refurbishment to give it a fresh new look. With extensive menus for both eating in and takeaway there is plenty for diners to choose from. Take your pick from a selection of fish such as cod, rainbow trout, haddock and many more then have it either fried with batter or grilled.

7. Louis Fish Bar, Canvey Island

Another community favourite in Canvey Island, Louis Fish Bar has been in the same family since 1982 serving delicious, fresh fish and chips to the area. Their philosophy towards food is about giving their customers the best quality, traditional fish and chips every time they visit. All of their fish is purchased from sustainable sources and fried in high quality, pure groundnut oil.

A family run business and somewhat of an institution in Southend-on-Sea, The Fish House is the place to go if you’re searching for traditional fish and chips in the area. Whether sitting in or taking away, the food is reasonably priced and cooked fresh in house.
