The festive season is upon us, and that can only mean diet debauchery, abandoned fitness regimes and six-hour TV marathons. However, it doesn’t have to be this way

We have caught up with some of the best fitness trainers West Essex has to offer to provide you with advice and top tips for New Year, and health and fitness resolutions

Is it possible to stay focussed throughout all this temptation?

It’s important not to be too strict with yourself and Christmas is a time of celebration with family and friends. DanceBox is all about balance and fun so whilst it’s important not to undo all of your hard work, I think you’re more likely to stay healthy and make good choices overall if you allow yourself a treat every now and again.

Love your body and be thoughtful about what you’re putting in there. Don’t be too hard on yourself, let your hair down and come see us in January if you want to kick start your New Year by having fun in the most energetic way possible.

DanceBox is all about building confidence and when you feel good, you look good. My clients tell me how amazing they feel insided and out after doing a DanceBox class, so we are running extra classes the first week of December for anyone wanting a little extra boost before the Christmas party season!

Can you share any advice to help keep the readers focussed and motivated for the festive season?

It is important to think long term rather than short term, and keeping up with your regular training is essential around this time of the year. If you stop now, you will put on excess weight, feel unfit and lethargic.

Then January comes around and you will feel stressed because you will feel unhappy by the way you feel. So keep the momentum going, don’t give up, make the gym still three times week and you will appreciate the work you do now when others won’t!

The main thing to remember is enjoy Christmas, will all have weak points and the party season is the hardest one to avoid. So perhaps cancel out the bad points with solid training sessions and sensible eating on regular days you haven’t got commitments.

That way you don’t feel guilty and binge on food and drink because you have not allowed yourself the certain treats you really wanted to indulge in to.

Is it too late to get in shape for Christmas?

We really don’t believe in crash or faddy diets, its all about moderation and balance with the ratio of 70-80% diet and 20-30% exercise to help you lose weight and tone up.

The best thing you can do is to enjoy everything you eat because after all it’s a party season!

However reduce your portion size, try to choose a starter over a dessert, reduce your sugar intake and opt for a white spirit and slim line tonic rather than wines. Try to be as active as you can throughout the days, choose to walk up the stairs, go for a walk at lunch and don’t miss your regular workout!

Last year we had a studio in the City, where the December season was all about client lunches and dinners and drinks every day. So we worked around our clients and that’s exactly what we are going to do in Loughton as well.

We have already adjusted our timetable and are offering meal alternative ideas, all our classes are flexible so you do not have to attend the same class each week, so there are really no excuses to drop everything!

Is there a solution for winter blues and lack of motivation?

You do just have to move! The more exercise you do the better you will feel, even if it’s a short walk, this will help.

Try to get at least 15 minutes of sunshine a day and take a good source of vitamin D ideally in a liquid form, maintain a good level of water intake as otherwise this may make you feel more sluggish.

Try not to always go for warming comfort food that will slow down your mental and physical functions, remember to eat your veggies and salads. Treat yourself to an energising massage or reflexology to help with your mood and motivation.

What have you discovered to be the greatest motivator for clients to get fit, especially over the party season?

The best motivator is to see results in as short as two weeks. After that they just keep training and smiling. Another important factor is to make people realise that lifestyle changes are not that difficult and it is just to rethink your food diary. We are all available to help with food dietary during each appointment so clients find it easy to follow.

Keeping fit gives you good health, focus, drive to all aspects in life. Feeling good physically keeps your everyday life happy. Healthy body- healthy soul. No matter what your speed is, walking, jogging and cycling are very important parts of a healthy lifestyle as they are activities that keep your muscles active and your blood flowing.

Hypoxi is the only inch loss method on the market which improves skin and burns fat during light cardio session. Clients only need to come for 30 minutes three times a week and you can achieve results as quick as four weeks.

Shaun Samonini from The Only Way is Crossfit shares his top five tips to stay active this festive season

1. One of the biggest reasons people don’t work out is due to time constraints. If you few days off over Christmas, that’s the perfect time to get active! This will reduce your chances of gaining weight, reduce stress levels and give you a break. It could also be something simple like taking the whole family on a walk in the park, or ice skating!

2. Get up early, you don’t need a lie in, don’t force it. Get up and get your exercise in early. This way, you give your metabolism an early boost and if you do slightly overindulge, the damage will be considerably less.

3. Be active after dinner too! Most of the time we’re so stuffed we just plonk ourselves on the sofa and binge watch Christmas TV. Again, try going for a walk or playing football in the garden with your kids.

4. Make smarter Christmas food choices. Instead of crisps and chocolates how about roasted chestnuts or dried fruit? Turkey is one of the leanest sources of protein so that’s a win, but maybe don’t have as many roast potatoes? Also, do you really want it or is it just because it’s sitting in front of you?

5. Drink plenty of water, it will stop you from drinking too much alcohol. No point drinking if you’re not thirsty right?

Shaun provides a free 10 minute workout you can do anywhere, without equipment. It can be your go-to workout for the festive period when you may miss a workout, or feel like there isn’t enough time. You must have 10 minutes free? Try this.
