Chris Waters partner at Meaby LLP in Buckhurst Hill shares with WEL his passion for his job and proves hard work is very rewarding

Who are you and what do you do?

I am a partner in Meaby LLP and I am responsible for the firm’s contentious team (all things dispute).

Where do you live?

I live in Lambourne End on the outskirts of Chigwell.

What do you love about your job?

I meet some really interesting people, deal with some great work and never have the same day twice. As a partner, I also have a lot of input in business development and the growth of the firm. That stops me from getting restless.

What is the best part of your job?

Dealing with such an ecclectic mix of cases. I act for a range of clients from owners of small businesses and individuals through to international multi-million pound organisations and successful public figures. I have acted in cases worldwide and in high profile matters such as the News of the World phone hacking litigation, the VW emmissions scandal and dozens of other matters.

What is the worst part of your job?

Admin. Ask any solicitor, you will get the same answer.

What is the secret of your success?

Simple really - Hard work, long hours, commitment and knowing that clients expect far more now than just legal advice. Nowadays, clients expect you to be their ears and eyes, have the ability to refer them to other professionals, make recommendations for possible joint venture connections and generally be an all round adviser.

What has been the proudest moment in your career so far?

Qualifying as a solicitor. It was hardwork but very rewarding. There is no better feeling than when you receive your certificate after five years hard slog saying that you are now a solicitor of the Supreme Courts.

You are a London based firm. What was your reason for opening an office in Buckhurst Hill?

I have lived in the Chigwell area my entire life having been schooled at West Hatch High School and attended the sixth form there. I am a great believer in giving back to the community. I sit on the governing body of a local school in Chigwell and like to do things to improve the area.

When we looked at expanding our firm, Buckhurst Hill seemed a natural fit. We wanted to bring to the area, all of the services that our clients in Mayfair, Camberwell and Richmond enjoy. It is also about bringing the Central London level of service to the area.

How do you relax?

I like to spend time in the garden pottering around and spending a couple of hours not having to think about work.

What would your alternative career be?

A property developer I think. I have always enjoyed working on property.

What is your greatest fear?

Failure - It is so important that if something doesn’t work out I know that I have done everything I could and it is not down to a lack of commitment.

What is your next ambition?

To continue expanding our business and being able to offer employment to local people.
