Dr. Munir Somji hair transplant and cosmetic doctor at DrMediSpa in Loughton talks to WEL about his passion for his job, making people happy and the secret to his success in the beauty industry

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Dr. Munir Somji. I am a hair transplant and cosmetic doctor at DrMediSpa.

Where do you live?

I live in Chigwell.

What do you love about your job?

Given my profession I perform a wide range of procedures from hair transplant surgery to facial aesthetics. My day is never boring and I’m performing the latest treatments, which generates a lot of interest.

What is the best part of your job?

When patients come back to see me for their review and say that we have given them their confidence back. Small changes in an individual’s appearance make a big impact to their lives.

What is the worst part of your job?

The fact that we can not help everyone with their problems! The industry moves so fast and new treatments come out all the time so my hope is that we can continue to find ways to help all of our patients.

What is the secret of your success?

Education and self evaluation is the secret to my success. I regularly attend all educational meetings and also run my own training academy. Through teaching others I feel I learn more, especially when the aesthetic industry moves so fast.

What made you want to become a doctor in the aesthetic industry?

I have always had a keen eye for beauty, I’m sure my wife would agree! I wanted to join a specialty that allowed me to use both my artistic and technical skills. The way we look has a big impact on how we feel. As a doctor in the aesthetic industry I am best placed to achieve that.

What has been the proudest moment in your career so far?

My proudest moment was a particular pro-rata case. As a hair transplant surgeon, I saw a young girl who had lost her eyebrows and part of her hair line after a house fire. She was bullied at school and lost her confidence as a result. The procedure was not available on the NHS. My team and I managed to give her back her eyebrows and reconstruct her hairline. Everytime she comes for a review she seems a lot more confident and reminds me of what can be achieved with good teamwork and technological advances.

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

It is impossible to see myself in five years time in this industry. I would not have imagined two years ago that I would be injecting dermal filers into feet to help women with foot pain from wearing high heels! Robotic hair transplant surgery is rapidly advancing. At the moment it is in its infancy but I certainly think that in five years it will be a fantastic option.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Much of my spare time is devoted to spending time with friends and family. I’m a keen sportsman and I enjoy playing tennis. My career takes me all over the world so my passport doesn’t have much room for any stamps anymore!

What is your most unappealing habit?

I am messy at home. Unfortunately gravity takes over and a lot of things end up on the floor.

What is your greatest fear?

I don’t spend my time worrying about things it is unproductive.

What is top on your bucket list?

I’ve always wanted to learn how to fly an aeroplane independently.

Do you have a guilty pleasure?

My guilty pleasure is binging on Netflix on Sundays! I love watching Suits!
