We caught up with Anthony Wright, the enthusiastic tennis player from Bancroft’s Prep School
Who are you and what do you do?
My name is Anthony Wright, I’m 11-years-old and in year 6 at Bancroft’s Prep School. I love playing many different sports, especially tennis. I play several times a week at Woodford Wells Club and I also train at Compete Tennis at Redbridge Sports Centre. I represent Bancroft’s regularly at rugby, cricket, football and cross country. In my spare time I like to play other sports, such as golf, table tennis and snooker.
Where do you live and what do you like about it?
I live in Woodford Green, which is ideal as I can walk or cycle by myself to school or to Woodford Wells. I’m a member of Woodford Golf Club, just across the High Road. Sometimes I go walking or cycling with my family in Epping Forest or Lee Valley.
Tell us about your family?
I live with my Mum, Dad, Sister Hanna, who is 13, and baby Brother Konrad. My Sister is a very good dancer, singer and actress, who has ambitions to appear in the West End, but she also plays many different sports for school, such as netball, hockey, tennis and athletics.
What is the most exciting thing that has happened to you over the past year?
Last August I qualified for the LTA’s Summer National Tour Finals in Bournemouth, and managed to come second in the U10 age group. I hope to go one better in the future! I have played for the Essex U12 team, and have represented the county at every age group since U8. I have enjoyed attending the LTA’s regional and national training camps over the last year, including at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton.
Who are your biggest influences?
Both my parents have played tennis, football and other sports with me since I was very young, and they give me a lot of support and encouragement. My coach at Woodford Wells, Paul Kitto, has taught me since I was five. My School has supported my tennis and allowed me time off to train. The professional player who I admire the most is Novak Djokovic, but I was also inspired by Andy Murray and the GB team winning the Davis Cup last year.
Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
I would like to continue to develop my tennis and compete at an international junior level. After that, who knows? I am also following my sister into Bancroft’s Senior School, so I will be taking my GCSEs in five years time.
How do you relax?
Apart from playing sports for fun, I like to read, watch films, and play on my Xbox. My favourite game at the moment is WWE Wrestling.
What makes you smile?
Enjoying time with my family and playing with my baby Brother.
What is your worst habit?
Like a lot of young tennis players, I sometimes get frustrated and shout at myself or throw my racquet.
What music motivates you/helps you unwind?
I like electric guitar solos, and sometimes teach myself to play tunes from Youtube.
Do you have a claim to fame?
I met the champion boxer David Haye at a tennis tournament, and have got the autographs of several famous tennis players, such as Martina Hingis, the Bryan brothers and Jamie Murray.
Tell us something about you that may surprise us?
I speak Polish as my Mum is from Warsaw. Sometimes when i’m on holiday with my family I like to climb high mountains (such as Snowdon, several Scottish Munroes and the highest mountain in Mallorca).
