Ray Andes managing director of Plumb Inn Merchants Limited proves having the right ingredients is crucial to create a successful business. He tells WEL more

Who are you and what do you do?

I am the managing director of Plumb Inn Merchants Limited an independent plumbers merchant supplying bathrooms and plumbing equipment from four branches in north east London.

Where do you live?

I live in Woodford Green.

What do you love about your job?

Making the customer happy and having a professional, happy and enthusiastic team working in the company.

What is the best part of your job?

I enjoy the people and the products. We are very lucky in the bathroom industry, we meet some great people from all over the world and the design of the products we sell are continually evolving with new products coming to market all the time from the manufacturers throughout Europe and the world.

What is the worst part of your job?

Red tape and all those things that are necessary but totally unproductive

What is the secret of your success?

Success comes from a cocktail of ingredients, hard work, self-motivation, having a good team with you in the business, attention to detail and most importantly customer service.

What has been the proudest moment in your career so far?

Probably when we paid of the last of the bank loans we had taken to start the business and were able to stand on our own two feet

Where do you see yourself in five years time?

I would love to say sitting on a beach but the truth is with a business that has grown in both size and strength. We would also like to open more branches to enable us to serve a wider range of customers.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

My main hobbies are playing golf at Chigwell Golf Club, watching Arsenal at the Emirates and skiing in the winter months with friends and family.

What would your alternative career be?

I would probably work in property. I love the design aspects of modern developments and would love to be part of creating some of those special homes that are out there.

When were you the happiest?

Apart from when I got married and when my children were born I would say right now. We have a great business, I have great family and friends, enjoy my hobbies and the odd holiday! What is there to be unhappy about?

What is your next ambition for 2016?

To continue to grow the business. We are also planning for the installation of a new computer system and trying to source a property for our next branch.

Do you have any summer holidays planned?

I have just come back from Miami and in June we are off to cruise the Canal Du Midi in Provence.

What’s your drink of choice after a hard day?

Either a gin and tonic or a good wine. I also enjoy a beer but try not to drink too much of it these days!

What is top on your bucket list?

I want to go the Masters and drive the West Coast Highway in the States, probably in a Winnebago.

Do you have a guilty pleasure?

I guess it is good food and a drink
