Hospices and high fashion maybe an unusual combination for some, but it certainly wasn’t the case for a beautiful teenager from Chingford.

16-year-old Jessica Wilson was the envy of her friends after she took part in a trendy makeover and fashion shoot at Haven House Children’s Hospice in Woodford Green during October half-term.

Jessica, who is in remission from leukaemia, transformed herself with a range of different outfits from Minnie’s Boutique in Brentwood and London-based style agency, Michelle Wainhouse Management.

Jessica’s condition means she has been unable to take part in half-term activities such as going to theme parks with her friends.

She has had to deal with side effects from chemotherapy and is due to have an operation on her hip once she has finished her treatment.

The makeover was an opportunity for Jess to feel special and have a fun afternoon with her mum Cathy. Cathy said: ‘We didn’t really know what to expect before we came, but it’s been such an amazing experience and treat. ‘Jessica has been unable to do normal stuff with her friends during half-term, so this was a really nice thing to end the week on.’

Although she was initially hesitant, Jessica found the makeover a ‘fun and different experience’ with her confidence growing with each wardrobe change. She said: ‘I wouldn’t have normally picked these clothes myself, but once I was wearing them I was surprised by how nice I looked’.

Spending time at Haven House has also changed Jessica’s perception of a children’s hospice. She said: ‘Haven House is a bright place with big gardens. If you think of a ‘hospice’, you think of just a ward with beds, but it’s not like that at all.’

Jessica wants other young people who have been diagnosed with cancer to know they can still have fun too. She said: ‘I think it comes down to your friends really. If they still include you then obviously, you can still have fun.

‘Life might be a bit difference, but you will still be you.’

Haven House has set up a Teenage and Young Adult Cancer Group which meets on the third Thursday of every month from 6 - 8pm.
