The food industry is constantly coming up with clever, catchy names to grab our attention. However, one West Essex restaurant has hit the nail on the head with a name that perfectly describes its ethos – La Nostra, quite simply ‘ours.’

La Nostra’s translation is all about ‘ours’ in the sense of sharing. It is at the heart of traditional Italian family values, but those values are held dear way beyond the matriarchs of the Mediterranean and this is evident from the woman who makes La Nostra tick – Sharmila Bholanauth.

By her own admission Sharmila can be impulsive, driven, and extremely passionate. In fact, La Nostra was very much an impulse buy. But years of eating out and quietly digesting not only the food, but also the service and décor of many restaurants, drove Sharmila to take the leap.

Equipped with an experienced business head from her corporate background (in both construction and investment management), Sharmila filled a gap in Epping that was much needed. Her vision was an intimate yet lively eatery where guests could enjoy great food and feel relaxed.

Of course there have been challenges, but as Sharmila tells me, these did not hold her back. “My personal drive for opening La Nostra stemmed from setting an example to my children, I wanted them to see that you can achieve no matter what the circumstances.” As a woman in industry, Sharmila came across some fierce resistance. She says: “There were times when I felt undermined and even oppressed, but it was important to push forward.”

A taste sensation

Of course the thing we want to know most about is the food itself and La Nostra doesn’t disappoint. From the legendary freshly baked focaccia bread (fresh from the wood-burning oven) to the delightful golden Arancini, the starters really do warm up the taste buds.

Then it’s nothing short of a dilemma to choose from a warming Pasta Picante (with spicy marinated chicken), a fresh Risotto Verdi packed with green vegetables, or perhaps the Zuppa di Pesce with mussels, prawns, calamari and seabass. If meat is more your thing then the signature Bistecca a Funghi is a must. This tender fillet steak with creamy mushrooms and Grand Padano is a real treat for the taste buds!
